An overhead traveling and transporting apparatus is provided to detect an obstacle in front of a transporting carriage during traveling of the transporting carriage and an obstacle under the transporting carriage when a grip apparatus is moved down by using one sensor. An overhead traveling and transporting apparatus(1) includes a track(10), a transporting carriage(20), a monitor device, and a selection device. The track is installed on or adjacent to a ceiling. The transporting carriage travels along the track and is guided by the track. The transporting carriage has a grip apparatus(22), a lift apparatus, and a sensor(30). The grip apparatus grips a transported article(80). The lift apparatus moves the grip apparatus down to a load port(92) of the transported article. The sensor emits light to a virtual plane in parallel with a traveling direction of the transporting carriage and receives reflection light. The monitor device monitors an obstacle in an emission direction of the emitted light based on the reflection light received by the sensor. The selection device selects at least one of a monitor region of the monitor device and the emission direction, sets a first state in which an obstacle in front of the transporting carriage is monitored by the monitor device when the transporting carriage travels, and sets a second state in which an obstacle under the transporting carriage is monitored by the monitor device when the grip apparatus is moved down.
