A method and an apparatus for automatically setting a parameter value of an operating mode in an electric motor forklift truck are provided to operate the truck without a driver's special control by automatically correcting the parameter value according to a recent operation pattern of the truck. An apparatus for automatically setting a parameter value of an operating mode in an electric motor forklift truck includes a sensor for measuring a rotation velocity of a motor(30), a sensor for measuring torque or current of the motor, and a controller(20). The controller receives values measured by the sensors and includes a CPU(Central Processing Unit)(22), a power inverter(24), and a nonvolatile memory(26). The controller divides the measured velocity into a plurality of zones, divides the measured torque or current into a plurality of zones, calculates a use time in the divided zones for a past predetermined time, calculates a use time ratio of the divided zones, determines a parameter value for motor control by using the use time ratio, and selects a previously prepared operating mode according to the determined parameter value.
