[Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A detachable head unit for converting multi - cylinder internal-combustion engines into self-driven air compressors comprises a casting having two (or more) combustion chambers 1, 2 pro vided with inlet and exhaust ports 4, 5 respectively and two (or more) recessed portions 13, 14 which receive automatic air suction and delivery valves, whereby the cylinders covered by the recesses 13, 14 serve as air compressors delivering to passages 33 in the head. The working cylinders are preferably, as shown, the inner cylinders, the adjacent exhaust ports 5 leading to passages 9 and the inlet ports 4 leading through passages 10, 11 to an inlet duct 12. The recesses 13, 14 are i of cylindrical form and each receives a valve assembly comprising a cage having a delivery slot 15 and inlet slots 16, 17 leading from an inlet passage 32. The slot 15 is masked by a plate valve 18 having a travel limited by stop plate 19. The slots 16, 17 act in conjunction with a similar valve 21 having a stop plate 22. The cage is perforated at 26 to receive an overload plunger 27, Fig. 7, which is actuated by a spring piston 28 subjected to the receiver pressure through a passage 31 to keep the inlet valve open when a predetermined pressure is exceeded. Water spaces 34 communicating with the main water spaces 35 are provided round the passages 32, 33. |
