A method for recognizing a face is provided to detect a face part efficiently from a moving picture or a still image capturing a crime site, enlarge the detected face part clearly, and compare feature parts of the face efficiently. A face image is extracted from an image capturing a face of a criminal based on an AdaBoost(Adaptive Boosting) method. The extracted face image is corrected. Feature is extracted from the corrected face image based on an HGM(Hierarchical Graph Matching) method, and the criminal is identified by comparing the feature with photos stored in a database based on an SVM(Support Vector Machine) method. Correction is performed by enlarging a part as much as a predetermined size to compare the part with the photos stored in the database, calculating a value of enlarged pixels based on an interpolation method, and processing the pixel values through a statistical analysis. The pixel value processed by the statistical analysis is improved by filtering low frequency noise with a wavelet filter.
