A combined muffler and air deflector apparatus for a vacuum cleaner includes a body having first and second ends, the first end adapted to be coupled to a blower port of a vacuum cleaner. A cap has a first end that defines an outlet, and a second end that is coupled to the second end of the body so that the body and the cap define a passageway for directing air from the blower port to the outlet. The outlet may be generally tapered such that air flowing through the passageway from the blower port is restricted. A device is situated in the passageway for muffling sound. In one embodiment, the sou nd muffling device comprises a divider that creates sound reflecting chambers. In anothe r embodiment, an acoustical pad functions as the sound muffling device.</SDOAB >
