A plasma display apparatus is provided to prevent the deterioration of phosphors by applying sub-field mapping where at least one turned off subfield is arranged between two turned on sub-fields. In a plasma display apparatus that a frame is divided into plural sub-fields(SF1-SFN) having different illumination numbers from one another and the number of sustain pulses of the respective sub-fields are reduced when current display screen displays the same images or gray scales, after reducing the number of the sustain pulses in the respective sub-fields, the plasma display apparatus is driven by including at least one turned off sub-field among the plural sub-fields. At least one of the plural sub-fields receives no signals during reset, address, and sustain periods.
