An (S)-cis-verbenol is provided to show brain protective effect on ischemic brain tissue damage caused by deutocerebrum atresia of aorta/reperfusion, inhibit the generation of free oxygen radical and the expression of cytokine acting on glioma cells activation, thereby being usefully used for preventing or treating ischemic stroke and used as a brain protective agent. A pharmaceutical or food composition for preventing or treating ischemic stroke comprises an (S)-cis-verbenol represented by a formula(1), wherein the (S)-cis-verbenol is extracted and isolated from pine needles. A brain protecting agent comprises the (S)-cis-verbenol.
