An LCD of a transflective IPS type and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to remove a stepped portion between a reflection area and a transmission area by forming an organic film even in the transmission area, thereby normally aligning and controlling LCs even in a boundary area between the transmission area and the reflection area. On an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) panel(170), LC cells including a transmission area(P2) and a reflection area(P1) are arranged in a matrix. An upper polarizing plate(168) is disposed in a front surface of the LCD panel. A lower polarizing plate(166) is disposed in a rear surface of the LCD panel. A backlight(180) is disposed in the rear of the LCD panel to supply light to the LCD panel. Each LC cell comprises the followings. A first compensation film(189) is disposed in the reflection area and matches a phase between light passing through the transmission area and light passing through the reflection area. A second compensation film(188) is disposed in the transmission area, and includes an LC layer having fixed alignment characteristics irrespective of external environment. An organic film(124) is formed in the transmission area as well as the reflection area. Therefore, a cell gap(d2) in the reflection area and the transmission area is the same according as a stepped portion between the reflection area and the transmission area is prevented. |
