A host interface circuit and a method for detecting an M-CARD are provided to detect whether the M-CARD is mounted to a host device more efficiently to control the operation mode of the M-CARD quickly and exactly, thereby shortening the initialization time of the M-CARD when the M-CARD is mounted to the host device and using a system resource efficiently. A method for detecting an M-CARD(Multi-stream CableCard) comprises the following steps of: generating an interrupt signal to check whether the M-CARD is mounted to a host device when the signal level of CD1#, CD2#, and MDET, signal pins is changed from a high level to a ground level(S500); determining whether to operate the M-CARD in an S-MODE(Single-Stream Mode) or an M-MODE(Multi-Stream Mode)(S502); and controlling the M-CARD to be operated according to the determined mode(S504,S506,S508).
