A method and a system for selecting a cell in a mobile communication system are provided to offer efficient cell selection and cell reselection operation to a terminal in the mobile communication system operating a broadcasting service-dedicated frequency bandwidth, thereby preventing the failure of uplink signaling transmission such as a system access, a routing area update, and a service request, generated as the terminal is camped on at unnecessary frequency bandwidth. A method for selecting a cell comprises the following steps of: determining whether cell searching is needed for a broadcasting service-dedicated frequency bandwidth providing only a broadcasting service; performing the cell searching by using the combination of the PSC and SSC of cells belonging to a frequency bandwidth capable of a unicast service except a combination of a PSC(Primary Synchronization Code) and an SSC(Secondary Synchronization Code) allocated in common to cells belonging to the broadcasting service-dedicated frequency bandwidth when it is determined that the cell searching is not needed; and being camped to a selected cell(861).
