A host device, a control method thereof, and a display device are provided to control operation by receiving an external signal from a remote controller through the display device, which outputs a control signal for the host device based on the external signal. An application program software part(334) calls APIs(Application Program Interface)(333) matched with a function of an OS(Operating System)(331) according to a control signal when a display device(200) outputs the control signal corresponding to an external signal, which is received from a remote controller, for operating the function of the OS. A second controller(320) operates the function of the OS by using the called APIs. A user interface matches the external signal with the function of the OS, and displays matching information between the external signal and the function of the OS. A second communication interface(310) transceives state checking data for checking connection with the display device and receives the control signal from the display device. The communication interface is one of RS(Recommended Standard)-232c, IEEE(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)1394, USB(Universal Serial Bus), and Bluetooth communication interfaces. An image processor(340) outputs the result of an operating system basis application program and the result from the execution of operating system, which is executed by a control signal, in image signal under the control from a driving driver to display those results on a display unit(350).
