A plasma display apparatus and a driving method thereof are provided to decrease the load rates of screen by reducing gray scale values at an area except for a center portion of a display panel using motion image signals. A plasma display apparatus includes a plasma display panel(100), a controller(200), and drivers(300,400,500). The plasma display panel includes first and second electrodes, third electrodes across the first and second electrodes, and plural discharge cells formed by the first to third electrodes. The controller detects first and second gray scale values of the discharge cells corresponding to a second area except for a first area including a center portion of the plasma display panel, respectively, converts the second gray scale value into a third gray scale value to decrease the second gray scale value, and generates control signals for driving the first and second areas based on an average gray scale value of the discharge cells obtained by adding the first and third gray scale values. The drivers drive the first to third electrodes corresponding to the control signals generated from the controller.
