A height adjustable head rest for a chair is provided to allow forming a space for head rest using a part of back seat and to facilitate adjusting the height of head rest by moving the head support upward or downward. A height adjustable head rest for a chair comprises: a head support(1) which is formed by separating the central upper part of a chair's back seat and inserted into the central inner space of the back seat to form a space for head rest; a gear axis(8) unified with the head support; a moving passage(10) fixed on a fixation plate(6); a stairs type gear established on the gear axis; a toothed wheel; and a handle to manipulate ascending and descending of the head support.
