The method involves determining a lambda coefficient of combustion using installations e.g. lambda probes, of an internal combustion engine. Fuel is injected in a cylinder which is disconnected, for a determined period. Air traversing the cylinder in which the fuel is injected in the determined period is concluded, during a variation of the lambda coefficient in the determined period. An independent claim is also included for a computer program comprising a set of instructions to perform a method for detecting a defect of a valve gear.
