A method of processing an order at an outlet for goods or services is provided. The method comprises the steps of: presenting a menu of available items at a customer operated terminal, receiving a selection of items on the menu from the customer at the terminal, providing an order document to the customer including an indication of the selected items and their cost, receiving the order document from the customer at a serving station, receiving payment from the customer for the cost of the order, preparing the selected items for the customer only after receipt of the order document, and providing the selected items to the customer to meet the order.
