Poly (potassium and sodium styrene sulfonate), its manufacture and its uses

Disclosed are polymeric therapeutic agents that treat antibiotic-associated diarrhea such as that caused by Clostridium difficile, the agents being physiologically potassium neutral. The copolymers contain polystyrene sodium sulfonate and polystyrene potassium sulfonate repeat units of Formulae (I) and (II), wherein 30% to 80% of the repeat units are represented by formula (I) and 20% to 70% of the repeat units are represented by formula (II).
