PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method suitable for the electropolishing of metal surfaces comprising iron, tungsten, magnesium, aluminum or an alloy of these metals, and substantially harmless regarding operational stability and environmental protection. SOLUTION: The electrolyte used in the method comprises methanesulfonic acid and at least one alcoholic compound selected from groups consisting of aliphatic diols of general formula C<SB>n</SB>H<SB>2n</SB>(OH)<SB>2</SB>with n=2 to 6 and alicyclic alcohols of general formula C<SB>m</SB>H<SB>2m-1</SB>OH with m=5 to 8, and does not comprise chromic acid or chromates.
