PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an escalator capable of reliably preventing the movement of footsteps when the operation is stopped, and easily performing the maintenance inspection work in a machine room. SOLUTION: A plurality of circulating footsteps 14 are supported by a main frame. The footsteps 14 are connected to each other in an endless manner by a footstep chain 13. A footstep movement preventive device 15 for preventing the movement of the footsteps 14 when the operation of an escalator is stopped is provided on the main frame. The footstep movement preventive device 15 has a stopper 24 and a displacement device 25 having the stopper 24. The stopper 24 has a pair of projecting parts 27. The stopper 24 is displaceable between the engagement position at which the projecting parts 27 are engaged with the footstep chain 13 and the disengagement position at which the footstep chain 13 is disengaged from the projecting parts 27.
