A method of identifying the data content includes: establishing a characteristic base; and the characters corresponding to various service applications and protocols are conserved in the characteristic base (101); matching the current content of the received data with the characters of the characteristic base, and obtaining the characters of the received data (102); based on the mapping relations between the characters and the protocols as well as the mapping relations between the characters and the service applications, identifying the service applications and/or the protocols corresponding to the obtained characters (103). An apparatus of identifying the data content is also provided. The data content identifying function of the method and the apparatus of this invention is consummated and the expansibility is powerful.
