A system and a method for embedding optical drive compatibility information in an optical medium are provided to determine compatibility of an optical medium and an optical drive by updating the optical drive to recognize the optical medium, thereby preventing damage to the optical disk drive. An information handling system(10) comprises process components(36), an optical disk drive(12), and a compatibility engine(28). The process components generate information to be recorded on an optical medium(14). The optical disk drive is interfaced with the process components, comprising an optical pickup unit capable of reading information from the optical medium. The compatibility engine is interfaced with the optical pickup unit, managing the optical pickup unit of reading compatibility information embedded in the optical medium. The compatibility information is related to physical damage to the optical disk drive for one or more processes executed by the optical disk drive on the optical medium, and the compatibility engine modifies the processes allowed by the optical disk drive to the optical medium by using the compatibility information.
