PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that grasps the progress of processing operation to the external controller, and surely makes it interrupt and stop, and that can turn off the power supply. SOLUTION: The image reader is connected to the external controller 2 that conducts communication with a plurality of personal computers via a communication line and has an image reading part 12 for reading original manuscript images; a storage part 13 for storing image data read with the image read part; a display part 14 for displaying instructional information on a screen; a transfer part 17 for transferring the image data stored in the storage part, to the external controller; and a control part 11 that changes the number of reading sheets and the number of reading pages, corresponding to the progress of original manuscript reading operation so as to display them on the display part during the original manuscript read operation in the image reading part, and also makes the number of transfer sheets and the number of transfer pages change, in matching with the progress of transfer operation and display them on the display part during the transfer operation in the transfer part.
