PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact projection type image display apparatus capable of displaying a high definition large screen image or a plurality of images. SOLUTION: The projection type image display apparatus has a plurality of projecting optical systems P1 and P2, which project luminous fluxes to different projection areas on a projection surface. Each of the projecting optical systems projects a luminous flux to a first projection area corresponding to this projecting optical system by passing the luminous flux through a virtual plane VP that includes a boundary line B between the first projection area S1 and a second projection area S2 corresponding to the other projecting optical system and is perpendicular to the projection surface S.
