The invention relates to a fossa component for an artificial jaw joint comprising a body having a bearing surface configured for placing on a bone of the skull of a patient, a concave joint surface and an edge that surrounds the concave joint surface. The body is configured for securing to the bone of the skull such that a first side of the body is disposed ventrally and a second side of the body is disposed dorsally. The edge comprises, on the first side, a recess. A mandibular component for an artificial jaw joint comprises a joint head and a securing section. Said mandibular component can be fixed to the jaw bone of the patient by means of the fixing section. The diameter of the joint head in the first direction is smaller than the diameter of the joint head in the second direction that is perpendicular to the second direction. The securing section can comprise one or more fixation elements on which muscles can be fixed. The mandibular component can be fixed to a jaw bone such that the first direction is sagittale and the second direction is transversal.
