A surgical bur having a shaft with a bur head at the distal end. A number of flutes are formed on the bur head. Each flute has a cutting edge. Two flutes are arcuately symmetrically spaced from one another having cutting edges that start at or approximately close to the distal end tip and have intermediate sets of flutes therebetween. The intermediate sets of flutes have chamfers so as to progressively engage flute cutting edges into the tissue that is to be excised. The cutting edge progression during the use of the bur decreases or eliminates chatter.
