The direct-injection IC engine with spark ignition has cylinders (1) with two air intake channels (7a, 7b) designed to produce tumble flow during charge changing. One channel (9) can be shut off so that the tumble flow is converted to spiral flow. An independent claim is included for a method for operating the engine.
