PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carriage locking detecting method for an image reader by which a detecting function for carriage locking can be attained while suppressing a rise in cost, and the image reader. SOLUTION: A scanner 1 includes a carriage 60 which houses an image sensor and an optical system and also has an opening part 67 for taking in image light from a document set on a document setting surface, a carriage scanning mechanism 80 which makes the carriage 60 scan along the document setting surface, and a carriage fixing member 23 which can perform switching between a locked state wherein the carriage 60 is locked to a fixation support pin 68 and a release state wherein the carriage 60 is separated from the fixation support pin 68. Since the carriage fixing member 23 is arranged partially covering the opening part 67 in the locked state and not covering the opening part 67 in the release state, the locked state of the carriage 60 can be detected on the basis of an image signal that the image sensor generates.
