PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an actuator capable of acting as artificial muscles, having properties similar to those of human soft muscles and attaining high design flexibility by eliminating the need for the use of special materials. SOLUTION: This actuator has a field body, a coil body, and a combining body, and the field body has a cylindrical peripheral yoke and a magnet, provided inside the peripheral yoke to generate a magnetic field in the space between the inner surface of the peripheral yoke and the outer surface of the magnet. The coil body has windings around which a wire made of a good electrical conductor is wound, and the combining body combines the field body with the coil body so that the field body and the coil body can be displace, in such a layout that the windings are filled in an area which allows the field to generate and within a predetermined range, thus effecting electromagnetic force between the magnetic field body and the coil body, by flowing a current in the winding of the coil body.
