PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method for causing a stepping motor to perform accurate step operation by simple preparatory operation immediately after the stepping motor is started. SOLUTION: In preparatory operation up to a primary step operation immediately after start, the energization of coils 19, 23 is switched in all different excitation patterns so that any excitation pattern is matched with the step state of a rotor 13. The order of switching of the excitation patterns in the preparatory operation is made identical with the order of switching of the excitation patterns in the primary step operation. After the step state of the rotor 13 is matched with an excitation pattern, the rotor 13 is rotated in steps so that the order of switching of the excitation patterns in the primary step operation is followed.
