PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor laser which does not need an extra detector for detecting laser beam. SOLUTION: The semiconductor laser 10 is equipped with a substrate 1, a cavity 2, a positive electrode 4, a negative electrode 5, an observation portion 6, and a current source 7. The cavity 2 is located on the substrate 1. The cavity 2 contains an active layer and emits laser beam. The positive electrode 5 is flat in ring shape and is formed on the cavity 2. The negative electrode 5 is formed on the back of the substrate 1. The observation portion 6 is formed so as to cut out a part of the positive electrode 4. The operator of the semiconductor laser 10 observes the laser beam oscillated through the observation portion 6. The current source 7 receives an indication command Com correspondent to the observation result to supply the current to oscillate the semiconductor laser 10 in an oscillation mode specified by the specified indication command Com to the positive electrode 4.
