PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing an organic EL device, and an organic EL device superior in sealing performance and excellent in light-emitting characteristics. SOLUTION: Since an anode 13 is formed on an element substrate 10, and after forming the anode 13, a barrier rib 14 is formed in a prescribed region on the element substrate 10 so that its own upper face 14a becomes leveled state with the upper face 13a of the anode 13, when an organic layer 25 and a cathode 17 are laminated on the anode 13 and the barrier rib 14, formation of level difference in the respective layers can be evaded. Accordingly, formation of the level difference in a cathode protection layer 18 installed on the cathode 17 can be evaded. Since damage of the cathode protection layer 18 due to the level difference can be prevented, an organic buffer layer 19 can be prevented from soaking into the lower layer side.
