A solid-state imaging device and a driving method thereof which are capable of reducing power consumption required for reading an image are provided. A horizontal transfer section 19 is constituted of a block A including a plurality of transfer electrodes 20 a aligned in rows, and a block B including a plurality of transfer electrodes 20 b aligned in columns. In the case where the horizontal transfer section 19 is a two-phase drive CCD, wirings 21 a and 22 a to supply driving pulses phiH 1 A and phiH 2 A are connected to the block A, and wirings 21 b and 22 b to supply driving pulses phiH 1 B and H 2 B are connected to the block B. While the solid-state imaging device 1 is being driven, after completion of transfer of electric charges from the block B to the block A, supply of the driving pulses phiH 1 B and phiH 2 B to the block B is stopped.
