The method involves switching a rotary printing press from an operating mode using a power supply of the press, to another operating mode using a selective power supply for transferring the press to an uncritical operating condition, during a mains supply failure. The press is switched from the former mode to the latter mode for maintaining the operability of an electric load that is necessary for the press, by an emergency power supply device (7) e.g. interruption-free power supply device. The device has a monitoring device (7.1) for permanent monitoring of the power supply for the press.
