The device has a sheet retaining system (6) provided in a cylinder (1), where the sheet retaining system is displaced by an actuator that is controlled by an evaluation/control unit (15). The cylinder is assigned to a combination drive (11) including a linear drive that is transferred to a rotor/motor shaft (12) in an axial direction. The rotor/motor shaft is driven to the cylinder by a rotary movement, and the linear drive is driven to the sheet retaining system by a movement, which is directed in the axial direction, in dependence of an actual position of a side edge of a sheet.
