PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane-electrode assembly for a direct methanol fuel cell having, between an electrode and a cation exchange membrane, a structure for preventing a liquid fuel from moving to a cathode through the cation exchange membrane. SOLUTION: In this membrane-electrode assembly for a direct methanol fuel cell formed by sandwiching the cation exchange membrane between an anode catalyst layer and a cathode catalyst layer, and structured to supply methanol to the anode catalyst layer, each of the anode catalyst layer and the cathode catalyst layer contains a carbon material, a cation exchange resin and a catalyst. The membrane-electrode assembly is characterized by satisfying at least one of conditions such as (a) including a methanol adsorbent in the cation exchange membrane, (b) providing a layer containing a cation exchange resin and a methanol adsorbent between the anode catalyst layer and the cation exchange membrane, and (c) providing a layer containing a cation exchange resin and a methanol adsorbent between the cathode catalyst layer and the cation exchange membrane.
