The device has a conveying system that drives articles e.g. painted vehicle bodies (10), via an inlet-lock region (3), a drying tunnel (4) and an outlet-lock region (5). Locking chambers (19, 31) of the inlet-lock region and the outlet-lock region have units (20, 33) which are provided in a position to change the volume of respective locking chambers between a maximum value and a minimum value. The units are provided in the position to change the volume for displacing air contained in the respective locking chambers.
