PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the recording and reproducing quality by automatically optimizing the focusing balance all around the disk. SOLUTION: While reproducing an optical disk, a current setup focusing balance value is updated, by changing the value from the current setup value in the positive and negative direction only by the amount of±a not affecting the reproduction, measuring the jitter in the reproduced signals for each case, calculating the difference e=c-d for each measured value, and changing the focusing balance only by the predetermined amount g in the direction that the difference e approaches 0 when the difference e exceeds the threshold f.
