PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which information on color development is reliably provided to toner and photoreceptor deterioration is prevented, so that high-quality images can be formed over a long period of time. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus using a toner having such a function that when the toner is exposed with light having different wavelengths, the toner particles develop colors according to the wavelengths or maintain a non-color-development state, a dotted photoreceptor on which dot-like photosensitive areas 73 are arranged is applied as a photoreceptor 10. The distance R between the centers of the arranged adjacent dot-like photosensitive areas 73 is made equal to a volume average particle diameter of the toner. Development is therefore performed with one toner particle on one dot-like photosensitive area 73; a toner image T is formed in a single layer without overlapping the toner, and exposure light providing information on color development can reach all the toner after the development. Even if the exposure light providing information on color development leaks in the periphery of the toner, since a space is left between the adjacent dot-like photosensitive areas 73, the degradation of the photosensitive areas is avoided.
