PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive discharge lamp lighting device excellent in safety since generation of electric shock is suppressed by reducing the secondary voltage and the voltage to ground with the discharge lamp disconnected, and the earth mechanism of a luminaire is not required. SOLUTION: In this discharge lighting device, a dc output Vdc supplied from a dc power supply part 2 is converted to a high frequency output in a converter part 4, a plurality of resonance load parts including inductors L1A, L1B, capacitors C2A, C2B are connected in parallel between the output ends of the inverter part 4, and discharge lamps LA, LB are connected to the resonance load parts respectively. In the case where this discharge lamp lighting device has a dc bias paths 8, 9 in which the divided voltage of the dc output Vdc supplied from the dc power supply part 2 is produced at the discharge lamp connecting point in a voltage dividing ratio A when the discharge lamps are not mounted, and in the case where any of the discharge lamps is not mounted, the dc output Vdc is lowered to the level satisfying Vdc<150/√(A<SP>2</SP>+0.5<SP>2</SP>) [V].
