PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of improving startability at starting of lighting of the discharge lamp, and to provide a projector incorporating the same. SOLUTION: The device is provided with an igniter circuit 8 impressing ignition pulses with different polarities at either end of an electrode of a high-pressure discharge lamp 7 at start of lighting, and that, a pulse width of the ignition pulse impressed on one end of the electrode is made wider than that impressed on the other end.
