PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable stroke characteristic engine allowing drive forces in both directions required for moving a shaft to be made appropriate by imparting a bias force to a control shaft while restraining an increase in the weight and size of an engine as much as possible, and high in the degree of freedom of design. SOLUTION: This engine 1 includes: a lower link 5 rotatably journaled to a crank pin 9 of a crank shaft 6; an upper link 4 connecting the lower link 5 to a piston 3; and a control link 11 connecting an eccentric shaft 12 supported by a bearing block 7b and a shaft holer 51 to the lower link 5; and changes a piston stroke by moving the eccentric shaft 12. In the engine, a compression coil spring device 21 is interposed between a web connection part 18 extended from the eccentric shaft 12 and a body-side connection part 20 extended on the undersurface of the shaft holder 51.
