PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device and a projector wherein the following problem is solved: in the discharge lamp lighting device to light a high luminance discharge lamp used in the projector, when suppression of increasing modulation is released, an appreciator perceives that the tone and brightness of the projected image of the projector are rapidly changing. SOLUTION: This discharge lamp lighting device is structured so that when suppression of increasing modulation id released, in the middle of transition to a steady lighting state right after the start of the discharge lamp, the suppressing is gradually released.
