PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus preventing color shifts by detecting meandering of an endless belt. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 sequentially which transfers toner images formed on a plurality of photoreceptor drums 51 by superposing the toner images on an intermediate transfer body 61 composed of a revolving endless belt and the image forming apparatus 1 is provided with a meandering detection device 80 detecting meandering of the intermediate transfer body 61. The meandering detection device 80 is provided with: a contact 81 which is supported by a supporting part 82 and has an open end 81a brought into contact with a side surface 61a of the intermediate transfer body 61 and following the intermediate transfer body 61 to thereby change the tilting angle of the contact 81; a reflecting part 83 provided integrally with the contact 81 and reflecting light; an emitting part 85 emitting the light toward the reflecting part 83; and first and second light receiving parts 86a and 86b arranged on both sides of the emitting part 85 and receiving light reflected by the light reflecting part 83 and then outputting signals according to the received amount of light. The meandering detection device 80 detects the meandering of the intermediate transfer body 61 based on the difference in the received amount of light by the first and the second light receiving parts 86a and 86b.
