PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rare earth metal complex useful as a polymerization catalyst. SOLUTION: This rare earth metal complex is expressed by formula (1) [wherein, Ln is a group 3 metal atom or lanthanoid metal atom (provided that samarium and ytterbium are excluded); R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>8</SP>are each the same or different and H, a halogen atom, a 1-20C alkyl or the like; each of adjacent groups to the R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>8</SP>may form a ring by optionally bonding with each other; the (m) pieces of Xs are each the same or different and a mono anion ligand; the (n) pieces of Ys are each the same or different and a neutral ligand; (m) is 0 to 3 integer; and (n) is 0 to 3 integer].
