PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeding mechanism capable of reliably separating a medium and returning excessive media to a storage part side without any trouble such as a damage on the media to be fed. SOLUTION: The paper feeding mechanism has a separation mechanism unit 51 having has a paper return lever 56 which is turnably supported around the axis orthogonal to the feeding direction of a paper sheet P below a paper guide path 45 and projecting with respect to the paper guide path 45 when being turned to the back side in the feed-out direction of the paper sheet P. The separation mechanism unit 51 is moved to the evacuation position in which the paper return lever 56 is evacuated from the paper guide path 45, the small projecting position at which the paper return lever is engaged with the paper sheet P duplicate-fed to the paper sheet P to be slightly projected to the paper guide path 45 side, and the large projecting position at which the paper return lever is turned to the back side of the feed-out direction of the paper sheet P, and projected to the position across the paper guide path 45 to return the paper sheet P on the paper guide path 45 to the storage space S side of a paper sheet cassette 3.
