Preparation of chiral secondary diol comprises reducing a diketone compound to the corresponding dihydroxy compound in an aqueous reaction medium containing water, secondary alcohol as a reducing agent, alcohol dehydrogenase and cofactor, separating the ketone obtained from the reduction, and isolating the formed secondary diols.
