The method involves triggering a regeneration of a particle filter (42) by a temperature rise of an exhaust gas before the particle filter, by inner engine measures or by an after-injection combusted at an oxidation catalytic converter (41). A determination of the exhaust gas composition is conducted before the filter. A regulation of the exhaust gas temperature is implemented before the filter by the determination and regulation of the exhaust gas composition, which is correlated with the exhaust gas temperature or change of the exhaust gas temperature, or by the change of the composition. An independent claim is also included for a device for regulating an exhaust gas temperature before a particle filter in an exhaust duct of an internal combustion engine.
