The invention relates to an in situ or one-pot method for preparing compounds of the formula (I). The method provides a compound of the formula (I) and comprises: a) hydrogenation of a nitrile function of the compound of the formula (II), in which R1 to R4 are essentially H, alkyl and n ranges from 0 to 4, in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, of a methylation agent and of an organic acid as a solvent at a temperature Ta lower than the temperature for initiating a reductive amination reaction in order to obtain a primary amine from the nitrile function; and b) reductive amination of the primary amine in the presence of hydrogen at a temperature Tb higher than Ta for obtaining the dimethylated amine of the general formula (I) activating the methylation agent.
