<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the availability of light rays in a liquid crystal display device upon carrying out color display using a color filter. <P>SOLUTION: The device includes a backlight unit 4 supplying light, R filter 32R, G filter 32G and B filter 32B generating a plurality of display light fluxes for color display from the supplied light, a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel 2 controlling the polarization direction of display light flux transmitting each color filter, and wire grid polarizers (WGP) 33R, 22G, 33B disposed opposing to the respective color filters, reflecting a TE polarized light component of the light supplied from the backlight unit 4 toward the backlight unit 4 and transmitting a TM polarized light component. Each WGP has such wavelength characteristics that the reflectance in the TM polarized light component is relatively high in the wavelength range of other display light flux than the wavelength range of the display light to which the color filter opposing to the WGP corresponds. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
