<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retardation film suitably used as a viewing angle compensation film for an in-plane-switching (IPS) liquid crystal display, having a wide range of feasible optical characteristics, wherein the optical characteristics can be readily adjusted. <P>SOLUTION: The retardation film has an optical anisotropic layer that contains the optical anisotropy material that shows the wavelength dependence on the retardation of a positive distribution type, wherein the retardation film includes an optically anisotropic film, where a relation of nx<SB>1</SB>>ny<SB>1</SB>is satisfied, between a refractive index nx<SB>1</SB>in a direction of a slow axis in an in-plane direction and a refractive index ny<SB>1</SB>in a direction of a fast axis in the in-plane direction; and a liquid crystal material, that is formed on the optically anisotropic film and forms homeotropic alignment. An Nz factor (Nz) and in-plane retardation (Re) lie within the range of -0.5<Nz<0.5 and 50 nm<Re<170 nm, respectively. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
