PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a short circuit protection system and a method of a distribution system which can minimize a blackout range by determining the direction of a fault and detecting the faults on the distribution lines constituting a loop exactly and interrupting the distribution line selectively. SOLUTION: The short circuit protection system of a distribution system comprises a circuit 103 for detecting the differential circuit between a power supply substation terminal current and a current at a loop point at each distribution line using a power supply substation terminal current on each distribution line of a loop system supplying power, a current flowing through the loop point and a voltage of the loop system, a circuit 104 for determining the direction of a fault from the differential circuit and the voltage of the loop system, and a circuit 105 for detecting the faulty circuit out of the distribution lines constituting a loop based on the differential circuit and the direction of the fault.
